History

When Swiss National, Pierre Tami came to Cambodia in 1994, he was moved by abandoned and destitute women in Phnom Penh and decided to do something about it.  Thus Hagar was born.  Over the past 15 years, Hagar has evolved and grown but its purpose remains the same: to restore dignity and hope to each woman and child who enters its care through social programs and enterprises.

 

Hagar's women's shelter opens in March for women and their children in Phnom Penh.

 


Hagar On-Time (known as Hagar Crafts) starts with the vision of providing income generating opportunities for women in Hagar's shelter.  23 women are employed.  
 
  • Hagar opens a foster home for children located separately from the women's shelter.
  • Hagar Catering and Hagar Soya begin operations.

 

Hagar begins installing water filters in rural  communities. Thousands of families have since had access to clean water.

 

 

House of Smiles, a residential care facility for disabled children, is established.

 

Her Majesty Queen Norodom Monineath Sihanouk of Cambodia makes an honorary visit to Hagar Shelter.

 

 
  • Four foster homes are built specifically for children.
  • Mr. Pierre Tami is granted a Medal of Honor by His Majesty King Norodom Sihanouk of Cambodia.
 

 
  • Hagar Australia is formed to support Hagar activities.
  • The US Department of State recognizes Mr. Pierre Tami for his work towards ending modern day slavery and human trafficking.
  • Hagar On-Time is awarded the G-Mark Good Design Award from Japan Industrial Design Promotion Organization (JIDPO).
 
 
  • Hagar's Aftercare Program for trafficked and sexually exploited girls.  The program provides a safe home and specialized care.
  • Hagar establishes a catering & facilities management business, Hagar Catering.
  • Mr. Pierre Tami is selected as one of the world's most "Outstanding Social Entrepreneurs" by the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship.
  • Hagar USA is established to support Hagar activities.

 
  • Hagar establishes a Community Learning Center (CLC).
  • Hagar International is formed and begins researching how Hagar's model might be replicated in other countries.
  • Pierre Tami and his wife Simonetta are recognized for their entrepreneurship for women and children at risk by the Swiss-based Brandenberger Foundation.
 

 
  • Nestle donates a factory to Hagar valued at an estimated US$2.7million.
  • Hagar implements Career Pathways, an innovative approach to job training and work placement.
  • Hagar's children's department begins the Community Based Care program.

  • Hagar International replicates its first Hagar model outside of Cambodia in Kabul, Afghanistan.
 

  • Hagar launches its newest social enterprise, Hydrologic, with the goal of providing affordable clean water solutions to Cambodians.
  • Hagar New Zealand is established to support Hagar activities.
  • Hagar International begins replication of its model in Vietnam.
