Today's Reality TV is often built around a process of rejecting participants. Thousands are rejected until ultimately, one person gets the social stamp of approval.
Hagar's reality works the other way.
We celebrate being able to say "yes" as often as possible to those most rejected and abused by society, those who need access to the professional and loving recovery offered by Hagar.
We embrace the losers of life as often as we can.
We still have to say "no" far too often. In years past we had to say "no" mostly because we were full to capacity in most programs. Today our capacity is significantly better and in most cases we say "no" for lack of financial resources.
Below is a real list of people we were not able to accept into a program in Cambodia this month.
• Three boys- all victims of an American pedophile
• One lady and her two children- this woman jumped out of the 1st floor window to escape being sent overseas into domestic work
• One 14-year-old girl- a victim of rape
• Three girls aged six, seven, and 13- all abandoned by their mother and abusive father
• A six-year-old boy- he saw his father kill his brother by throwing him into the rice thresher machine.
• Four siblings age seven, nine,11,14- the father was sentenced for raping one of the children and the mother is already in jail for murder. They have no relatives to take care of them.
(Data from Sue Hanna)
We have to say "no" with a sober understanding of our own limits and a fundamental commitment to maintain the highest quality of care for when we can say "yes."
It is one of the hardest choices Hagar staffs have to make.
Thank you to so many donors who made our "Yes" possible- about three thousand times over the last year.
With increased financial support I know we can turn "no" into "yes" for these and many others. For Hagar's reality, we want more "losers" on our stage of winners.
